Excursions is a acousmatic piece that explores possibilities of moving from one sonic landscape to another through the gestural articulation of sonic modulation (dynamic, sudden and sequential). Excursions makes use of three pieces of source material: plucked rubber band, a small screw falling onto a porcelain plate and the forced continuation of the screw as it rolls upon the porcelain surface. The introduction states the source material which has been modified by manipulating the amplitude envelope. Filtering techniques were also used to ‘tune’ the material. The first movement explores and demonstrates some possibilities of dynamic sonic modulation by moving from un-pitched material to pitched material using variable filter banks. The second movement makes use of causality and interruption by creating phrases from ‘cause and effect’ procedures. The third movement explores sequential modulation by moving from one sonic area to another through the iteration of sonic events.
