Needing no introduction to crowds in his home city of Aberdeen and across the North-east of Scotland, CS Buchan still needs some explaining to those further south who may not have experienced one of his memorable live sets. His customary (and often hilariously self-deprecating) on-stage humour can’t hide a genuine and prolific songwriting talent.
In CS Buchan, you have a real talent. Happy to sit on the Scottish folk side of music with contemporaries such as Drever, McCusker, Woomble and James Yorkston but equally happy to flirt with more indie foreign johnny’s such as Bill Callahan and Elliot Smith. That is not to say that Buchan sounds particularly like any of these artists! His sound is certainly his own.
CS Buchan is keen to utilise an impressive list of friends as collaborators, featuring members of IndianRedLopez, The Little Kicks, Kitchen Cynics along with Buchan’s daughter Katie for live and studio appearances. Katie Buchan, at the age of 14 has already begun to earn praise for ‘being much better at singing than her father’. Seriously, the girl is good. Collaborations with artists from all creative fields are evident as the wonderfully expressive artwork by emerging Scottish artist Steve Murison on latest album, ‘Material Others’ demonstrates.
CS Buchan has shared the stage with the likes of Alasdair Roberts, Jeffrey Lewis, The Cave Singers, Acoustic Ladyland, Thomas Truax and the Wave Pictures.
“Accessing a CS Buchan gig these days appears like a rare privilege; it’s an experience that is never to be repeated, forgotten or recreated, but is ultimately fulfilling to the point of exasperation. You applaud out of courtesy, then depart with his songs stuck in your head indicating a songwriting master, not a novel amateur. Aside from the banter of a damned funny man, CS Buchan gives a lot more than expected; offering a songwriting masterclass which is the envy of his contemporaries. The audience wonders if this funny man can make serious music, or if this serious man can make funny quips. He can do both brilliantly”.
“Our top pick for 2014. One way or another - and no matter what your musical taste is - please give this album a listen.”
“His constant output of high-quality songs is most certainly above-average, bordering on the psychopathic.”
