So here's some half assed beats to celebrate a decennium of Squadron. I can see you scratching you balding scalps right now. Who? Well, Squadron are some heavy weight underground promotors from Malta, who've been supporting the West-Coast Sound of Holland since days one, which in their case is, tada! 10 years.
I remember going to Malta for the first time. It must've been 2003 or something, with Luke Eargoggle. We were met by three wide-eyed young boys and slapped in a rickety cab that was blasting Savage "Don't Cry Tonight" and drove through dodgy Gaza Strip styled backroads to a 70's hotel with stale maroon carpet, half lit chandeliers and a big aquarium. We knew we were in for something special.
And indeed. The island turned out to be teeming with West-Coast fans and never since have I seen rows and rows of kids in Bunker Shirts, offering up their girlfriends for photos and asking to autograph literally dozens of records. Quite surreal really, because if ever the term outsider did apply, we certainly fell in that bracket and this was for us a completely new experience that was never matched in the real world - which is probably for the best.
As expected, the party rocked hard and over the years there has remained a strong connection between this weird little Mediterranean outpost and The Hague. A pairing perhaps only matched in it's unlikeliness by the fact that these young boys survived 10 years in this shark pool business and anno 2013 have managed to stay out of the swamp of commercialism and are still throwing some of the most daring and musically diverse parties on that rocky island.
So hats off to you Karl, Rudi and Kevin, and here's to another 10 years!
