No, please, I grew up in Japan, you do NOT want to emulate the Japanese school systems. Kids used to commit suicide during the final exams that essentially determine your social standing for the rest of your life, and students would spend two, three, four years in pre-college preparation courses in order to get into the school of their choice if it was even semi-competetive. If you hate teach-to-the-test, don't look to Japan... :(

You literally HAVE to know one of the Japanese alphabets to get into the equivalent of...I think it's middle school, but it might be the equivalent of grammar school...

i learned how to read by my dad turning off the volume on kingdom hearts and having to read all the subtitles before making it to the next level. and i also learned to love history by becoming a lore master. gaming and learning on your own made me a good student, :D

It was Mark Twain, he said "I've never let schooling get in the way of my education."

I had a teacher a few semesters ago that basically just made us read the book and take tests on it. If I wanted that I would have saved the $600 for the class and just bought the damn book -_-

Actualy, it is good for a child to have some extracuricullulaulrue :D activities so that he/she doesnt go out of his way to seek out too much partying and wasteful loitering early on. Even though we are at the socialisation vs. studying hard argument then...

We had a social studies and history teacher named Mr. Costley. All he did was show documentaries and play devil's advocate to spark massive 3 day long discussions. i learned more in that class than any other, because he truly cared about the subject matter and thought it was super cool.

I always kicked the hell out of tests, and often cared about the subject, but never did assignments or papers because it involved restating the obvious that had already been learned, and figured i could use my time more efficiently on other things.

Growing up with WarCraft 3, I fell in love with the world of Azeroth and its citizens. I studied the game manual and the novels and the internet articles and I loved it all. This, in turn, made it easy for me to sit in history classes and remember the events and people and how or why it happened and what consequences it had. I had already learned how to study and learn and remember a "history", so it was easy to do it with real history.
