For nearly two decades activists have urged the Federal Communications Commission to act and set a rate for long distance prison phone calls. The high rates for prison phone calls have meant that loved ones end up spending thousands of dollars just to keep in touch with loved ones behind bars. After being long stalled this effort is getting the promise of action on the federal level and a new spokesperson: Jason Mewes of Jay and Silent Bob fame. CNN’s Emma Lacey-Bordeaux takes a look at this issue, the money behind it and why making these calls affordable might actually be in everyone’s best interest.
