CNN Radio News Day: October 29, 2012

Welcome to CNN Radio News Day.

Here are some of the stories we cover in today's edition:

* One-fifth of the United States is bracing for a gargantuan storm system hitting the East Coast. Hurricane Sandy's tidal surge could top 12 feet in some coastal communities prompting evacuations from Delaware to Connecticut. Professor Nicholas K. Coch, a coastal geologist at Queens College of the City University of New York, says there has never been a storm like this one:

“Just realize that no hurricane has hit a major American city directly. This is the first one that is doing it."

* Hurricane Sandy is threatening the most heavily populated region of the United States just eight days before the presidential election. The latest poll numbers show the race between President Obama and Mitt Romney is still way too close to call. And what impact Sandy will have on the election is also unclear. But, CNN's Lisa Desjardins talked with one voter who appreciates the respite from all the campaign talk that hurricane Sandy has provided:

"I'm actually a little grateful... it's nice to kinda get a break from everything" says Rehema Kavugha.

* Many education experts say President Obama and Mitt Romney aren't spending enough time talking about America's schools. Dr. Carol Swain is a professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University. She says it appears the candidates just don't want to touch the issue of education and reform:

"It strikes me that neither candidate has a clear idea of what to do. Like we're sort of stuck in a rut. We have been for decades."
