Welcome to CNN Radio News Day.

Here we go over the fiscal cliff. On the final day of negotiations, Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement in time to prevent nearly all Americans from facing big tax hikes. A a bunch of automatic spending cuts will also kick in tomorrow. CNN's Lisa Desjardins has been covering the events on Capitol Hill:

"Congress clearly has gotten not just in the habit of punting things down the road. But this seems to have become the new normal. And I really don't want to say that, but I think that anyone covering Congress has to face that reality."

Every year Lake Superior State University publishes its List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. Last year's list included words like ginormous, baby bump, man cave, pet parents, shared sacrifice, and trickeration. John Shibley is one of the list's caretakers. He says this all started back in the 1970's with an informal poll at a New Year's party and has developed into a tradition for the school:

"If anything, this is just fun. It allows us to sort of take a cross-section of what's on people's minds."

The thought of higher taxes at the stroke of midnight might have you tightening your belt this New Year's Eve. But whether money is no object or your budget is battered you don't have to skimp on the bubbles. Wine expert Elizabeth Schneider says if you're gonna go big time because you're really happy that the year is over you might want to go for the real stuff - Champagne:

"Champagne is only Champagne if it's from the small region in France, the Champagne region, and the reason it's so expensive is because it's a limited region. There's only so much of it and so only so much wine can come out of it. And the methods that they use are very extensive to make the wines. "
