On October 6th, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, was viciously attacked, tortured and left to die on the outskirts of town. He died 6 days later from severe head injuries. It is alleged that Shepard what singled out by his attackers because of his sexual orientation. On the day Shepard died, Lesléa Newman arrived in Laramie to speak at the University of Wyoming's Gay Awareness Week.
