It’s a centuries old manuscript that details witches zooming across the night sky on broom sticks, casting spells, creating hail storms, and summoning fog. The manuscript is a rare document that details a mass hysteria that swept its way across early modern Europe with a ferocity that resulted in the executions of more than 40,000 people.
In an unexpected turn of events, Dr. Andrew Gow, a history professor at the University of Alberta, unearthed what is thought to be one of the first texts to document modern notions of witchcraft. The book — one of only four thought to exist — had been misfiled in the University of Alberta’s Bruce Peel Special Collections Library. On this episode of the CJSR Edition Dr. Gow to discusses what we can learn from this dark and disturbing artifact of our history.
Then, in the second part of the program, we hear from two young Rwandan refugees who have found a new life in Edmonton thanks in part to a student funded program that sponsors people affected by war and civil unrest the opportunity to purse post-secondary studies in Canada.
