In 1874 Laurent Garneau planted a Manitoba Maple Tree on the southern banks of the North Saskatchewan River. It was the same year that Garneau and his wife Eleanor set up a homestead on River Lot 7 in what is today Edmonton. 138 years later the windswept tree stands as the symbolic birthplace of the Edmonton neighbourhood that bears Garneau’s name. On this episode of the CJSR Edition we take a look at the contemporary contours of the complex community that Laurent Garneau set in motion.
