Suffer and bring beautiful music Highly melodic, beautiful music from any where, any time, any place.
VOCALS, VIOLINE: Julie Elven
PIANO: cis minor
"The Monk by the Sea" (German: "Der Mönch am Meer") is an oil painting by the German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich. It was painted between 1808 and 1810 in Dresden.
From my very young childhood I was fascinated by this picture: A single figure, dressed in a long garment and with his chin on one hand, stands on a low dune sprinkled with grass. The broad expanses of sea and sky emphasize the meager figure of the monk, standing before the vastness of nature and the presence of God. What is he thinking? What is he feeling? Why is he at the sea? I have hundreds of interpretations and whenever I am at the sea I think of the lonely monk ...
This pieces started as one of my earliest piano compositions something like 8 or 9 months ago. Some months later Julie joined SC and listened to that piece and we started conversation about music, the monk, emotions ... and soon she felt inspired to add her gorgeous voice ... I felt overwhelmed by the beauty and drama Julie had added.
She sang beyond the genius of the sea.
For she was the maker of the song she sang.
The ever-hooded, tragic-gestured sea
Was merely a place by which she walked to sing.
(excerpt from Wallace Stevens poem "The Idea of Order at Key West")
It took us another 6 months mainly waiting that we both felt the right time has come to finish the piece and share it :-)

Ich habe es gerade schon auf Julie's Seiten angehört, es ist unheimlich schön. Wunderschönes Piano und Gesang, die Violine hätte gestrichen auch super geklungen, aber das Pizzikato ist auch klasse! :-)
