Drummer, writer, and music producer Chuck Mays has been making music since he was a child. Chuck just completed his first solo music production project, The Modest Means Project (2011), which features various Bay Area hip-hop and R&B artist (Do D.A.T, Krystal Azul and…). Born and raised in San Francisco, Chuck Mays has a vast background in soul and jazz music, and plays the drums. His mentor was the late great jazz musician Billy Higgins who gave Chuck his first drum kit. Chuck did not learn to read music until he entered middle school and became a part of the Bright Moments Music Lovers Program. He attended San Francisco School of the Arts High School and majored in music and visual arts. During high school, Chuck formed his first rap group with classmates and neighborhood friends called the No Cents Crew. At that time, Chuck immersed himself in rapping and the art of battle rapping. Not wanting to be stuck in one aspect of hip-hop, he interwove rhyming and worked at perfecting his skills as a B-boy and graffiti artist.
In 2003, Chuck co-founded Namawu Records and the Beatmites music productions, which released the Infestation EP and a compilation titled The Package (Something for Everybody). As co-founder of Namawu Records, the label obtained an international distribution deal and contributed music to the A&E reality TV show, Son’s of Hollywood. As co-founder of Namawu Records, Chuck also story-boarded and directed multiple music videos for the label’s artists.
In 2010, Chuck decided to branch out on his own and founded his own music production company, titled Mr. Mays Music, and Rock Ya Nog music .
