If your morning involves getting up at 7 o’clock with the aid of a grandé cup of coffee, just imagine how you'd feel getting up at 3am every single day. This is just a small part of the lives of the Benedictine monks who live at St. Michael’s Abbey in Farnborough. Their extremely early start is followed by a day of solemn prayer and solitude, following a rule dating back over 1,500 years. Back in March I was fortunate enough to gain an insight into their lives – and to savour the sound of silence, away from the trains and the traffic. Guided tours of the grounds run every Saturday and Bank Holiday at 3pm, with educational group visits possible by prior arrangement. For more information, visit: http://www.farnboroughabbey.org
