From 1973 comes this rip of the infamous tale "The Dare" from vinyl record "Scary Spooky Stories," a classic released by Troll Records and narrated by several of CBS Radio Workshop's finest vocal talents of the day. Narrated by the legendary Ralph Bell, "The Dare" is about a boy who accepts a dare to go into a graveyard at midnight to approach a grave and leave a piece of evidence as proof he was there.
This tale should be familiar to anyone who has ever read Alvin Schwartz's "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" series, which includes a variant. Many other books also contain versions of this tale. It is one of the most often-repeated folktales in the world. Still, this version will bring back memories for many in their 50s and 60s, and may fascinate and entertain folks from a new generation for years to come due to efforts to rip the old tracks an make them available again online.
Troll Records is well known as a publisher of plenty of spooky albums in the 1970's. The album "Scary Spooky Stories" seems to be geared toward younger listeners, with six classic ghost stories read by Ralph Bell, Robert Dryden and Daniel Ocko. You've probably already heard several of the stories, especially "The Skinny Toe" and "Wait 'Til Martin Comes." The Troll Records series also includes "Great Ghost Stories," "Thrillers and Chillers" and "Weird Tales of the Unknown."
