About
Checking my calendar or passport reveals the truth - The Piano has been my companion for over thirty years. And I wouldn't want it any other way. I took the usual path: Classical piano lessons, Harmony Studies etc. - just as you would expect.
Admittedly, at first sight a piano doesn't carry the "sexy" label attached to, say, the E-Guitar but on second thoughts, it's more like an entire orchestra. When you know how to use the keys the world is yours. Well, ok, at least the world you can create. A few years back I added the Bass-Guitar and, let's be honest here, that is almost as sexy as the E-Guitar!
At some stage it was time to leave the notes others produced behind. And that worked best for me within Jazz. My choice to get comfortable with my music by playing established work has stood me in good stead. But I have long since left my comfort zone and am now writing my own material.
The developments in the music-software area as well as the possibilities offered by using the Internet have given me great opportunities: Making music with other people, independant of time and place, is the perfect fit for me.
However, playing live gigs with different bands over a number of years has given me a well-rounded experience: practice sessions in smelly backrooms, dragging Flight-cases around in the dead of night, you name it, I've done it. But that differentiates Live performance from Studio work - I wouldn't want to miss it! The gains are invaluable and add to the repertoire. It's just a different discipline, a separate world.
