It's starting to look like that the Seattle Sounders FC struggles at the start of the season were a thing of the past. Stringing off some well-looking wins has them turning the corner. The guys, including returning guest commentator Wesley Magge recap Saturday's win against FC Dallas and look at the stretch that includes facing off against the defending MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy and the quest for a 4th US Open Cup title against the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL. We also talk about the NWSL's Reign FC and how picking up the first win of the season against Cascadia rivals Portland Thorns would be a helluva way to stop that losing streak. Outside of Seattle, the news no one could avoid in the MLS was the announcement of the vaunted 20th MLS franchise. New York City FC they're calling it and the ownership group is a joint-effort between Manchester City and the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. So, hate them automatically? Lastly, with the European seasons in the books now, rather than looking back at our respective favorite clubs over there, we hand out our own awards. No these aren't your typical Best XI type stuff, rather the opposite of that. We handed out the inaugural Cheeky Cheeky Bastard, Sepp Blatter Public Speaking, and the best of the lot, the Jackass XI awards. What exactly are these awards you say? Let us explain them:
Cheeky Bastard of the Season
Whether it was straight up on the field accomplishments to where they made playing the game look easy/comical OR they were equally entertaining off the pitch as they were on it. The footballer that captured our heart, mind & laughter who gave us a season of joy is a definite cheeky bastard.
Sepp Blatter Public Speaking Award
FIFA boss Sepp Blatter has been known to say things that are well...stupid. At times the power of his words spreads around Europe like an airborne virus and at times players, managers or those on the fringes of being involved with football in anyway end up saying something that you'd think it came from Blatter's mouth. While there can only be one Sepp Blatter, mimicking his way with words usually leads to some fascinating headlines.
The Jackass XI
The anti-Best XI. These are the footballers who captured the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Some of the players named here are there for the simple fact that they're not liked by the person who inducted them in.
And for those listening to who made the various Jackass XI, we'll be putting a visual to these - that's right a team sheet showcasing the Jackass XI is in the works. This is episode 39 of the podcast, one away from a mid-life crisis.
