About
Raw, humid, dubby, mysterious – when Cheap and Deep’s Jay Ahern goes to work on tracks, those are usually the characteristics that are going to define the end results.
Born in 2009 while working at Hard Wax in Berlin, Cheap and Deep Productons is only the latest in a long line of aliases for Ahern, who has spent nearly two decades floating under the surface as a quintessential producer’s producer.
With a catalogue dating back to 1992, when Jay was living in Dublin, Ireland, he began releasing his own unique productions backed with remixes by Carl Craig, Morgan Geist and Deep Dish on his Aquarhythms and Hydroelectric imprints, by the late 90's the singles became cult classics and were reissued on the Astralwerks label.
2005 saw the launch of the Earsugar Beatbox label alongside Jay's "Add Noise" production moniker. By 2006 he had relocated to Berlin and began releasing on the Hard Wax distributed Handwerk label, thus furthering his reputation as Add Noise.
Berlin also proved to be fertile ground for collaborations, Jay began projects with Robert Henke (Monolake) as Termulator X, Henrik Jonsson (Gunnar Johnsson, Jonsson/Alter) as Kvadratklang, Adam Marshall (New Kanada) as Étapes and Stefan Schneider (Mapstation, To Rococo Rot) as Hauntologists.
After a steady stream of releases, gigs and festivals which culminated with Cheap and Deep's excellent live performance at Mutek 2010, the next year saw studio sessions and new live collaborations with Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum, Reagenz) as well as Morgan Packard (Thicket, Anticipate Recordings).
Jay has most recently relocated to Boulder, Colorado and works as a Label Manager for Beatport at their Denver HQ.
