    EGR 15 year anniversary - Day 10

Everyday this month I'm releasing a new set to celebrate 15 years of DJing. April 1st '98 was the first music event I hosted and the first night I DJed.

This is the final recorded live mix that I did at Bad Monkey, unfortunately the mono switch was enabled on the DJ mixer. As things go after over a year of running the event internal politics finally became an issue that could not be ignored with the main core crew all siding with each other more or less against me the one DJ who dropped techno from time to time. I distinctly recall the internal opposition labeling this set as "not dance music", so says the house heads. I admit I didn't know if I was going to clear the floor with the Surgeon track 10 min in, but I didn't... It cracked me up at the time though as when I gave the set to DJ Chino / Ivan / friend from Madrid he was very enthusiastic about it mentioning it was very good, etc. I visited Madrid in the summer and spent ~10 days hanging out including DJing at an underground he hosted in the foothills of Madrid that was well attended (~300 people).

Anyway I shrugged the internal Bad Monkey finger pointing off and quit the crew / event I was central to founding by April. I certainly didn't kill attendance with the music I dropped. The whole thing just kind of fizzled out. I recall one sign when Bad Monkey crossed the no return line and that is when we stopped turning off the neon beer / corporate lighting in the windows of the venue. In the beginning we'd turn off as much signage to make it feel like less like the event was at an above ground venue. Somewhere around December / Jan that just stopped. That is when Bad Monkey started to die and the resulting finger pointing was pointless at the end. Dropping attendance had nothing to do with what styles were presented at Bad Monkey.

Bad Monkey continued running through May or June that year then things fizzled out never to return. I spent one more year in SLO to graduate college (computer science degree) and even hosted one final event in May '02.

This was only the beginning to my audio adventure which continues today over 12 years later from when Bad Monkey ended. I spent a lot of time during the Bad Monkey years and following year self-studying a lot of audio engineering topics in addition to reading as many technical computer music books as possible. My fascination for spatial audio began around this time and I thought quite a bit about it. I had the opportunity to study at CCMIX (studio of Iannis Xenakis) summer of '01 in Paris for a month and this certainly gave me a renewed perspective insofar that I just have to keep my head down and keep working hard. It turns out the studio I had at home was essentially better than CCMIX, etc. I actually composed the piece I made at CCMIX on a computer at an internet cafe because they were faster than what was in the studio..

It was a wonderful summer and at the end of my trip I also spent over a week in London and caught up with some of the London acid techno producers I hosted in addition to attending the Hackney Marsh festival and several squat parties that weekend.
