A brief history

Cargo, Sheffield first opened its doors in February 2006. The night was born out of desire and a determination to push forward thinking house and techno music; something which the city seriously lacked.

Starting life at a commercial bar on a lonely Tuesday, it was obvious success was not going to be an overnight thing. As confidence and a following grew, it was time to try something different – a one off 12 hour Bank Holiday Sunday shindig at a venue 3 times the size was a gamble. The night was huge and it paved the way for a Sunday night underground clubbing phenomenon in Sheffield still going strong today.

A move to a larger, better equipped venue was the next logical step, but after a short stint of midweek shenanigans it was obvious Cargo needed to be a weekend event.

After another hugely successful bank holiday event at the Corporation nightclub a bold approach was made to Sheffield’s biggest club, The Plug who had indecently been monitoring the movements of Cargo and its resident DJ’s. A proposed joint venture with Plugs inhouse night Grounded was the way forward, bringing in world class acts such as Loco Dice, Jesse Rose, Claude Von Stroke, Laurant Garnier and Danny Howells was an opportunity too good to turn down.

The Earth room at Plug witnessed some of our best parties but with minimal control over proceedings it was time to once again find a new home, next stop: Penelope’s. The old disused casino was the perfect backdrop for a Cargo New Years Eve party and to celebrate our 2nd birthday. Then a one off party with Simple Records boss Will Saul just about brings us up to date.

We are now residing at probably one of Sheffield last remaining underground venues The Lions Liar - hosting all night parties for the discerning Sheffield clubber.

As a Sheffield clubber, you may not have been to or even heard of Cargo. But let us assure you that this fact is what makes the events so special. Cargo is an UNDERGROUND club night. Larger nights in the City may well scoff at Cargo's presence amongst them - but we like to keep it that way. You can't beat that element of surprise.

We showcase cutting edge electronic music to a select crowd of spirited enthusiasts with impecable taste. If that describes you... well we'll see you on the dancefloor.

cargo || mango* resident DJ team

::: Kassien

(James Maplebeck & Mark Reed) Co-founders of both mango* and cargo, the boys have been at the forefront of everything since the start over 3 years ago, directing a music policy, ensuring nothing but quality house & techno since day one. Aside from heading up one of Sheffield’s cooler club nights, Kassien have also had their fair share of success playing alongside superstars such as Jesse Rose, Will Saul, Yousef, Justin Long, Chris Finke & Click Box to name but a few.

::: Ryan Johnson

Ryan has been with us since day one, had it not been for his desire and enthusiasm to give Sheffield something it was so badly needed, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Mr Johnson has since ventured north up the M1 where he has been plying his trade in Leeds at some of the cities best nights. Ryan is resident for the super cool TW_TS nights warming up for the likes of Butane, Mark Henning & Sweet ‘N ‘Candy both here in the UK and in Berlin. He is also resident for the infamous Louche after party hosts Chimpanzoo.

::: Paul Growns

Paul is no stranger to us, and indeed lovers of all things deep! Paul has built himself a reputation as one of the cities finer deep house dj’s. The big man is resident for the long running night BIO and is regular guest at nights such as Diasha, Delve deeper, Wobble and Detune. Paul has been more or less been running the inside room at all the mango* events and has shown his versatility playing the cargo after parties – a welcome addition to the team

::: Dufrain

Andrew Wren aka Dufrain has joined us for a second stint as resident after leaving Sheffield to tour South America, he has since returned with a fresh outlook and new musical direction. Since being back in the Steel City he has been hard at work in the studio with his first 2 EPs being snapped up by Argentinean label Gatenegro and Australian imprint Itinerant. A welcome return of seriously talented young man.

::: Ben Trowie

Trowie was picked up by the mango* team after impressing them with his technical ability and versatility to warm up a crowd or smash a peak time set. This theory was cemented at the summer opening parties by warming up the terrace at mango*, then closing the after party by ably following an absolute beast of a set from Shrink Records artist Pollyy. Ben is also resident at Sheffield’s Sunday night shindig Fatsound held at Cellar 35.

cargo || mango* promotion/creative team

::: Dan Whyles

Dan hooked up with the cargo team in 2007, already a promoter in his own right he approached us with vision of running a series of summer outdoor terrace parties, hence the birth of mango* terrace sessions. Overwhelmed by his enthusiasm we proposed he came on board as a full time promoter and of course he jumped at the opportunity. Dan has been instrumental in not only co-ordinating our events promotion, but also building relationships with outside agencies, DJs and record labels.

::: Kerry Whyles

Kerry (yes Dan’s brother) has been beavering away in the background of our events for the last 2 years. He is responsible for all the artwork, posters, flyers and décor you see at our events. Our Kez has just invested in a state of the art camera and will be at most of our events, so if you get snapped doing something you shouldn’t on the mango* terrace don’t worry you can buy the evidence from us for a minimal fee.
