On February 21, 2011 Conscious Breath Adventures was engaged in Week 3 of our 2011 Silver Bank swim with humpback whale season. It was morning and we were aboard the mother vessel preparing for our day out with the whales. As everyone was getting ready, one of the crew came up from below top tell us that he could hear a whale singing through the hull of the boat! I quickly deployed the hydrophone overboard and started recording.
Looking around, we soon realized that there were three whales very near the boat, and one of them was the singer. The other two were a mother and her calf. The male was her "escort". This was an interesting discovery, as conventional thinking holds that singers are typically solo male whales trying to attract a female, or possibly to establish territory; no one really knows. But this male whale was swimming in the company of the mother and calf and singing loudly and clearly. What was his meaning in doing so? Perhaps it was a territorial or protective display after all, but we don't know, either.
The whales stayed near the boat for some time before we were able to get in the water to listen to the song and see the whales for ourselves to see them for ourselves. There was even some video shot, I'll post some of that later and put the link in here then.

That buzzing in the background is a bilge pump running aboard one of our tenders. You can hear it a few other times during the recording, too...
