La Marcha Tropical is the first single from CAMPO’s debut album.

Even though the premise of this song may evoke a certain air of simplicity, its extravagant sound collage boasts a mixture of hip hop, cumbia and western-style guitars, along with noticeable nods to Bajofondo and different lyrical quotes.

It’s noteworthy to mention that uber young Swedish singer Ellen Arkbro doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. It was during the recording sessions for La Marcha Tropical that she learned how to convey her lines through both phonetics and by asking what her words meant and trying to relate.

Ellen’s sugary voice –which instantly reveals traits of a more jazzy background-, fits like a glove within the aura of chunky hip-hop beats, congas and cow-bells found in this piece.

The ever-so-distant mix of retro, almost vintage, South American cumbia with such refined, classic-style voice allows us to rethink these sounds from an overall new perspective.

“Lo que a mí me va mucho es la marcha tropical” is a quote warm-heartedly taken out of context from Volando Voy, written by the great Spanish composer Kiko Veneno.

Can you see how I have waited for this?
    It’s a moment that I just can’t miss
I’m so excited, excited to be
Just stand so close, so close to me
A new floor, a new ceiling
A new culture, a new meaning
Can you hear my feet it feels so right
A new rhythm in my blood tonight
