After 20 years of playing mostly A and E minor alone in my room, I finally started singing and playing original songs in early 2009. I had just come out of a marriage and threw myself at the open mic scene, standup comedy at first. After a few months I bumped into a singer songwriter from Texas, Charley Crockett (@TrainRobbersNYC) who ended up crashing at my apartment for a month, and inspired me to make the switch. He's also the one who first called me "BZ".
For the next year I hit open mics constantly, I was making up for lost time. Then in the spring of 2010, I heard Deb Zep (@DebZep) sing at an open mic, ran right up and asked her if she'd sing a duet with me and three years later we're married with a two year old. She came to music late, just like me, and if you've listened to her stuff, you'll agree that's a goddamn shame (@DebZep, seriously).
By day I work for the Mad Men animating banner ads for useless crap. By night I play with my family and several times a week I play the subway platforms. It's become my absolute favorite way of rehearsing: you get to play for hundreds of people, you can keep running through the same songs, AND you get paid. I'm looking forward to recording some future busking sessions and posting regularly. Thanks Soundcloud!
