Anticipating the much awaited release of Buraka Som Sistema's sophomore album, the undisputed kings of kuduro release the party anthem (We Stay) Up All Night to work up a sweat before "Komba" hits the streets.
Being the true explorers of the lusophone melting pot that they are, this new single shines in true Buraka fashion, combining the African heritage of the percussive rhythms with the infectious synths and pumping basslines that are stirring the world's most forward-thinking clubs.
Taking the Buraka sound one step further in this custom-made anthem for ravers and geeks, the lyrics mix the Portuguese and English language to reflect the increasingly globalized world we all live in. If at first listen it seems directed towards party animals, J-Wow explains the song goes a little bit further: "It started as a dedication to all the freaks, geeks and nerds who stay up all night on the Internet, on Facebook, Twitter, iChat and so on, but also on clubs, raves, concerts and parties all over the world."
This homage to the increasing importance of social networking and digital media is especially evident in the band's brand new video, directly referencing phenomena like Chat Roulette or other popular live video streaming websites like Boiler Room, where top DJs play their records facing a webcam and have their beats broadcasted to the biggest audience in existence: the Internet. The immediate access to music and dance may be something we take for granted, but this video emerges from the need to celebrate the digital revolution we all participate in everyday.
On (We Stay) Up All Night Blaya makes her debut as a full-fledged vocalist, a transformation that began to take form on stage (where else?) as she began to experiment with her voice as a percussive instrument, instantly becoming an essential part of the Buraka sound. As J-Wow put it, "After spending so much time on the road with Blaya it was inevitable that she stepped forward. We became so united on stage as a band that it had to shine through on the record". To give it a finishing touch on the vocal department, who better than London's own Roses Gabor? Riot put it best when he said "She brought tons of great ideas to the table, some even too good to 'spend' them all in one track!"
Although the traditional Buraka elements are all immediately clear on the second we press play, it's also obvious that the band's sound is mutating into something different, as the members themselves continue to evolve and grow as musicians and artists. Regardless, Kalaf prefers to keep it simple as he says "This is just another stop along the sonic route that we propose for the new record." Far from selling it short, the sharply dressed master of ceremonies explains: "This single, as well as the other tracks on the album, bring together two essential ideas. On one hand we respect the idea of continuity regarding the work we've been doing since "From Buraka To The World".
On another hand we feel that our concerts have been gathering an increasing amount of attention from the people who like what we do, so we felt it was important to bring both of these worlds together: the club and the concert arena".
The single (We Stay) Up All Night will be released on October 17th through Buraka Som Sistema's home label, Enchufada. For those who can't sleep at night waiting for the "Komba" album to drop, Enchufada has announced a world wide release on a Halloween night, October 31st.
