This is my submission for the WNYC & Soundcheck 'Remix The Rails' contest. The brief was to create a composition from a set of provided sound recordings from the New York subway, which comprised the following:
1. Escalator at Grand Central Terminal
2. Escalator at the World Trade Center
3. Emergency Exit at 86th Street
4. Aboard the 4 train
5. Card Swipe at 86th Street
6. Three Notes at Times Square
7. Ding Dong at 14th Street
8. Announcer at Spring Street
The rules mention that you can use any other sound files you want but my submission is 100% based on the provided soundfiles. Literally everything in the track is made from manipulated edits of the material, and I didn't use any outside sources. I wanted to see if I could generate a groove from the sound palette I had and this is the result.
I completely guarantee that I didn't use any outside sounds! Just have to make that clear. This is all constructed from edits, effects and general manipulation.
I hope you enjoy. As a life-long appreciator of the New York subway system (from looking at graffiti books and watching films like Warriors and Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3 as a kid), it was a joy to create this. I have only visited New York once in my life but have always felt a resonance with it, and felt a connection somehow... Thank you very much for checking!
