Nanorhythm, aka Richard Wragg, débuts his immersive techno with 'Beyond The Green Wall', comprising two tracks of contemplative beats with a headphone vibe that stay focussed on the dancefloor, albeit from its outer regions. Remixes come from the highly respected Spatial and a double helping from Broken20 label boss TVO.

Hailing from a small town near York but residing in London, Wragg is best known for his work on the ill-ec-tro-nic blog and associated club night. His association with Broken20 stems from a party in 2009 where he booked TVO and gave him a demo at the end of the evening. Amongst the tracks was Nanorhythm’s 'Continental Breakfast', subsequently included in TVO's highly acclaimed FACT podcast. Following their initial encounter, the two kept in touch and a TVO remix of the track was planned for release on TVO’s then home, Highpoint Lowlife. The death of HPLL operations cut that plan short but Broken20's birth affords the opportunity for both artist and remixer to release their versions.

The original track calls to mind myriad influences: the pensive lyricism of Radiohead's more electronic moments, the beguiling monotony of Kosmiche and the understated wriggle of vintage Gescom. Overtly simplistic, it uses minimalism to draw attention to the devil in the detail of its every aspect and is worryingly moreish.

It's followed by another Nanorhythm original, 'Amniotic Haze', which trawls the depths of Berlin dub to depict a bleak murk, only to look skyward from the gutter via classic Detroit pad work; at the midpoint, a single square bass note raises proceedings further with restrained energy.

Spatial's remix of 'Continental Breakfast' showcases the producer's skill in building complex layers of percussive components, establishing a laconic groove that evokes the funk of UKG before the original's hook expands the perspective to wide-screen. Swirling 4Hero synths and broken breaks are the final ingredients in Spatial's melting pot. Watch the Broken20 space for more material from this highly-rated beatsmith in the coming months.

TVO will need no introduction to fans of Broken20. His 'For A&R Stuff Mix' sets about reinforcing Nanorhythm's dub-tech bounce before releasing a rounded 4/4 thump and ever-changing sound design throughout melody and meter. Over 11 minutes, it's an agonising tease for more material on B20 in the future. This sensation is cemented by his 'For Thor' mix, grounded in stripped-back triplet beeps and THAT synth sound from the source material, the track itself influenced by forthcoming work from Production Unit for the label.

From dazed electronics to bruising techno, 'Beyond The Green Wall' can be seen as a further statement of intent from a label keen, and proud, to push the envelope.
