About
Paul Connolly (b. 1968 in Calgary, CANADA) began making music when he was 7 years old. Initially studying piano and music theory, through his formative years he also added voice, saxophone and percussion.
Graduating high school with Honors in Fine Arts, he studied Music Composition and Art History at the University of Calgary, later furthering his studies at the Recording Arts Program of Canada, in Toronto CANADA.
Paul has studied with David Klinger (piano and harpsichord), Helen Beach (piano), Carmen Tellier (voice), and compositional training with Leonard Manzara, Alan Rae, and Gregory Levin.
Traveling to places such as India, South Africa and the Middle East, Paul's work often reflects these experiences through direct cultural reference, or source materials that are captured, then manipulated. He has worked in Film, Radio and Television, performs both solo and in collaboration -- using instruments, found objects and electronics in different configurations, and composes for electronics, acoustic instruments and audio soundscapes, working in free improvisation as well as more structured musical forms.
Recent compositions have included working with visual artist Derek Michael Besant; creating soundscapes to accompany visual art installations shown internationally, sound installations as part of Houston's Art Car Museum show "Planes, Trains, Cars and Bikes" (Fall 2009), and as part of the "They Who Sound" Summer 2009 series - featuring new compositions for prepared tape, live electronics turntables & guitar, and performances using alternate music controllers such as the Monome, and Nintendo Wii.
Currently residing in Sugar Land, TX with his wife, 5 year old son and four pugs, when not thinking about music, he dreams about music. Or zebras...
