One of the first songs I wrote. This song was inspired by a stray dog.
I used to live in Voortrekker road Kraaifontein and at that point in my life all I did was play the guitar and listen to music at home. Most mornings I would hear cars hooting at this stray dog who would just walk across the busy road without a care in the world. The dog was always tearing open dirtbags on the days when the dump trucks came obviously looking for food. So I took it upon myself to give this dog food on most mornings when I saw her. I even gave her a name , I called her "Lonely", Some days I would even look out for her as it became routine.
around the same time in my life I also met a great Artist/musician who lived in my neighbourhood and who´s ideas and dreams immediately resonated with my soul. We became important to each other very quickly sharing our great love of art, music and spirituality. Unfortunately the most beautiful flowers are often plucked from the garden to soon. His life was taken by the murderous wind that blows through some of our streets in Cape Town.
A few evenings after the tragic loss I was sitting at the gate in front of our home with my guitar feeling angry, lost and most alone and who should show up at that moment to stand by me in the confusion but "Lonely"! The dog sat beside me and when I looked into her eyes this song came pouring out of the universe. the song was completed in 3-4 minutes. I continued feeding lonely untill she didn`t show up anymore. When ever I sing this number I have a feeling of gratitude towards the dog, my freind and just human kind because they all offer me something, an oppertunity to appreciate and respect all definitions of life and just life itself.
