Brasswork Agency is Justin Rickles, a musician, engineer and event producer from Chicago now making noise in Los Angeles. His sound first drew the attention of European DJs with the release of Plastic Smile EP on Plex Records. The EP featured the vocal techno tracks, "Crushed & Shaken," and "I Must Have You." In March 2008 - while he was on DJ and production hiatus as tour manager and sound engineer for a rock band the entire year - Lefthouse Recordings published Brasswork Agency’s luscious ambient tech-house release, Hollywood Rain EP.
In 2009 his sound pushed forward at a renewed pace with releases
scheduled for Communique Records (run by techno-legend Woody McBride /
DJ ESP) and the French techno label Scander Records.
Justin Rickles’s career as an electronic musician began when he started DJing and producing music in Buzz Tracker and Reaktor under the name “Sinuous” from 1996-2004. He released vinyl on Dark Techno Records and High Octane Recordings and DJed constantly in the U.S. art and rave scene. Then in 2005 Justin returned to the US after spending time with Open Sound Control and Reaktor developers at Native Instruments’ headquarters in Berlin, and he released For All the Wrong Reasons as the debut for his newest project, Brasswork Agency.
He dwelled in the world of IDM and obscure techno with his releases on (o)ndo;music, m3rck Records and his own Auxprocess netlabel until he released the four thick minimal techno tracks of Plastic Smile EP on Plex Records in 2006. Plex then had the track “Crushed & Shaken” remixed by Brasswork Agency, Pappas and Ambitronic then released Plastic Smile Remix EP in 2007. Also in ’06-‘07 Justin worked closely with New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago in small and large arrangements. They created and performed original works and also collaborated on rearrangements of selected works by Beethoven and Shostakovich.
Despite this range in style there is no mistaking the signature Brasswork Agency sound.
January 2009 Justin took on the job as house sound engineer and
production supervisor for the one club in LA with a 24hr entertainment
license, Avalon Hollywood, running the setup and sound for the worlds
biggest DJs and electronic musicians.
