About
Tobias Delius : Tenor Saxophone & Clarinet
Joe Williamson : Bass
Steve Heather : Drums
The name of the trio "BOOKLET" comes from a small book we refer to in our concerts filled with our influences and most beloved songs from composers such as Herbie Nichols, Louis Tebugo Moholo, Misha Mengelberg, Kachamba, and Jimmy Hendrix. We use these songs as springboards for our improvisations, never knowing when they'll come nor when they'll leave. Th "BOOKLET" is also the cover of our new CD to be released through JEDSO Records.
Tobias Delius was born on 15 July 1964 in Oxford, England. He began playing saxophone in 1980 in the German Ruhr region. In 1983/84 he lived in Mexico City where he played in the “Cuarteto Mexicano de Jazz” led by pianist Francixco Téllez. Delius moved to Amsterdam in 1984 and studied for a short while at the Sweelinck Conservatorium. He quickly became involved with Amsterdam improvisers and dropped his studies to immerse himself in the improvised music scene. In 1990 he was awarded the Podiumprijs from the organisation Stichting Jazz in Nederland. He has worked in Europe and overseas with such musicians as Steve Lacy (October Meeting ’91), Louis Moholo’s Viva-la-black (South Africa ’93), Bill Frisell, Mark Feldman and Trio Clusone (Clusone Jazz ’93), Misha Mengelberg (“Pollo de Mare”, Angelica ’96 in Bologna), Steve Beresford (“Signals for Tea”, Vancouver ’98), Jeb Bishop, Kent Kessler & Hamid Drake (Chicago 2001) and Ray Anderson (Rotterdam, ’01). Tobias Delius leads his own quartet with Tristan Honsinger (cello), Joe Williamson (double bass) and Han Bennink (drums). The CDs “The Heron” (ICP 033), “Toby’s Mloby” (ICP 034) and “Pelikanismus” (ICP 039) were enthousiastically received both at home and abroad.
Joe Williamson .Born in 1970 in Vancouver, Canada. Studied music at McGill University of Montreal from 1989 to 1990 and then moved to Europe in 1992 where he lived for three years in Amsterdam. He has been living in Berlin since June 1998. Joe Williamson performed numerous concerts and festivals as soloist or in diverse ensembles. He worked or recorded with: Ab Baars, Han Bennink, Steve Beresford, Tony Buck, Toby Delius, Andy Ex, Gianni Gebia, Vinny Golia, Tristan Honsinger, Luc Houtcamp, Peggy Lee, Paul Lovens, Evan Parker, Jon Rose, Leonid Soybelman. Living in Berlin, the young Canadian Joe Williamson is at the moment THE bassist of the European Improv and Free Jazz scene. He plays with Sven-Åke Johansson in Hudson Riv- and in the Candy-Trio (soon out on GROB), he can be heard in Tobias Delius' Quartet, he is a member in Leonid Soybelman's Kletka Red, Thomas Borgmann's Boom Box and Martin Siewert's Trapist, he plays in duo with Olaf Rupp, and can be heard again and again in groups with the drummer Tony Buck, and sometimes he is invited by Eugene Chadbourne to play in his European trio (GROB321). No question about it, Williams is working a lot, a "typical" bassist: flexible, powerful and virtuosic. Review of The Ungrateful Carjacker (Joe Williamson - GROB536) Joe Williamson is also an excellent soloist. The Ungrateful Carjacker is his solo debut-his entirely playful rich dark drones suddenly manifest themselves, as does a hidden groove, or a deep pulse that holds everything together. In the decisive moment, there are also suggestions of tradition. The Ungrateful Carjacker is a thoroughly rich record. It does not define bass playing anew, but accentuates it. Joe Williamson is able to overcome well known techniques and equally well known idioms. His improvisations are so sure of themselves, so round, that they have the character of compositions.
