Back in early 2011, right around the time that forward thinking R&B really started to rise to prominence, we were particularly impressed with Chicago production duo Supreme Cuts, who's strange and arresting take on the genre they at the time said was inspired by "the thought of Mannie Fresh and Phillip Glass kicking it." We've kept up with them since then, and though they'll be releasing an official album soon on Dovecote, we're happy to say that we'll also be teaming up with Dovecote to release their new mixtape Chrome Lips later this Summer. In case you just can't wait that long, we're also going to debut a new track from said album right now.
Since he landed on the digital scene with a string of tracks in the very beginning of this year, exceedingly young but impressively talented rapper Haleek Maul has been making waves with his brooding rhymes that exude a practiced confidence that would be impressive for any rapper, let alone one still firmly embroiled in his early teens. Considering his style, getting him on a track with Supreme Cuts made perfect sense, and "Gully," the result, is probably both artists' best work to date. Supreme Cuts come through with a sinister and epic beat that manages to sound as pretty as it is magisterial.
Meanwhile Haleek spits hot fire over the whole thing, finally intoning "I am not a person, I'm just verses stuck inside your head." That's some cold ass shit. "Gully," as well as being on the Supreme Cuts mixtape, will also be featured on Haleek's upcoming EP Oxyconteen, out June 14th on Merok Records. If "Gully" has given you a taste for these artists, fear not, as Chrome Lips features Maul prominently. So look for more great stuff from them soon, and check the track above.
