@Lzoeg: The song is not perfectly clear about whether the character is a "client" or not. If he isn't then I guess the parts of the song where it says "you never will be clean again" "this never will let you go" and "So lie to us and just say that there’s never emotion in all that you give away" are not toooooooo perverty (its arguable, depending also of the kind of relation he has to the girl, but they still are a bit, because those are judgmental lyrics that sadistically challenge the girl's mental protection against a certain pervert conception of what she does and try to convince her to be ashamed). But if the character is indeed a client, those lyrics are awful, awful. You say the client seems to be more aware than the typical client, I dont even think so. To say "Im gonna be the last one to be seen with you in light of day" means he thinks he's so special doing so, and its just reminding the girl to be ashamed while hes not. In general, if a client insists like the character of this song on the perversion and shame of the deed, and insists to victimize the prostitute like is done in this song, but still go for renting her.... - I mean, that interpretation would be so perverted it would be mind-bugging. Im really not sure about how to interpret this weird song, but I think a character that would insist on the perversion of the situation at the same time because he is saddened by it but also (partly unconsciously ) because seing the perversion of it excites him (and in the process actually making the perversion happen, because perversion depends a lot of how things are seen ) is psychologically possible, and could be the subject of this song. One could say such a point of view is interesting, that the character is being sincere and lucidly envisioning the ugliness of the situation, talking about his mixed feelings about the perversion of it, but I think, as he is twice responsible for this perversion to happen, it would be a most awful and unnecessarily harmful point of view.
Of course I can be wrong enough about how to interpret it. - Katrina Rose Pilant

"your smile hurts me..." are simple lyrics but the story that davey and jade have laid out, allows me to envision what's behind the smile and eyes of a woman who has been through this. it's saddening and beautifully done.

@claramel: I get a very different feeling from the lyrics... it sounds to me like the song's from the point of view of someone who has a lot more awareness than the average "client". the lyrics seem to be more sympathizing and lamenting than criticizing (e.g. "how could you let them buy you?"). for me, the words combined with the poignant and desolate - almost broken-sounding - music capture the sadness and perversion of the entire situation. because he is also self-aware; while he sees the tragedy of the girl's life - that while he can move on, the girl will never be "let go" - he also realizes that he is a product of society, and that he "will be the last to want to be seen with you in light of day". he knows he's taking advantage of her just like everyone else, and that he can't really do anything to help her, and feels helpless.
obviously, in the end no one can interpret the lyrics 100% accurately except davey himself... but that's just my personal interpretation. - claramel
