Christopher Black, better known as Blacky, is one of Belfast’s most popular local DJ’s, with 20 years of experience in the technique. He first discovered his passion and talent for DJing at the young age of 12 whilst experimenting with his friend’s decks. Not long after he got his own set and from there developed his skills as a DJ and began playing at private parties around the city. He got his first proper gig at the age of 17 playing as a warm up act at the Glenpark Night Club, and became a regular at a local under 18’s disco between 2000 and 2001. His growing expertise saw him gain more frequent gigs, playing in Paradise Lost at the famous Eurpopa Hotel Belfast, the Front Page, Space and Belfast Pavilion Bar.
As his talent and love for electronic music grew, it was only fate that he discovered Ibiza and became a frequent traveller to the island. It wasn’t long before he himself came to play for fellow holidayers, getting gigs at bars and pool parties allowed him to develop his musical experience and gain a better understanding of reading a crowd. By 2006, Blacky found himself with a regular spot at the Elephant Rooms at the Europa Hotel back in Belfast.
At present he is busy promoting and playing as one half of the successful monthly techno night ‘Cave’ which has been running for around three years. Cave has been run in many of Belfast’s prominent night clubs such as The Front Page, Bar Buddha; located at the Odyssey Pavilion, Mynt Night Club and Brownes (Warehouse) Boucher Road where the night is currently being run. In addition to this he has been a prevalent crowd pleaser at underground parties throughout Ireland.
He is keen listener to all music genres, but electronic music is his forte with influences from acts such as Carl Cox, Dave Clarke, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha and Underworld. Starting out playing House and Happy Hardcore music, Blacky eventually expanded his talents and has been known to play anything from House to Trance but at the moment he is recognized for playing deep dark techno with a hard edge to it. Very Intense. He has proudly supported Marco Bailey, Sven Wittekind, Dan Ghenacia, James Ruskin, Len Faki, Pet Duo, Chymera and Mark EG to name a few. Blacky's biggest personal achievement to date was playing at Life Festival May 2011, taking the main stage spot alongside headlining acts John Digweed and Jeff Mills.
Blacky is now expanding his dedication to electronic music into production, and is soon to collaborate with his ‘Cave’ counterpart to make music of their own. In addition to this, the two are keen to advance the promotion of their monthly techno night to a national scale. Watch this space.
