Music Description
The style of Black Pillow is hard to put in one box. It is Deep House with a twist. Influences from funk and discohouse are varied with Downtempo or a stronger sound from the corner of Tech House. But each track is carefully chosen and has a drive witch always translates well to the dance floor.
Biography
Black Pillow (Joakim Lindhout) was born in the city of The Hague in The Netherlands. At the age of 9 he played the piano for several years and it was here where he learned for the first time about the more personal side of music. At the age of 15, he discovered turntables by listening to scratch and turntablism legends like; Dj Shadow, Cut Chemist and Qbert. Not long after that, his taste spread out towards the famous Ninja Tune label with artists like Amon tobin, Mr. Scruff and Bonobo. This started his fascination for electronic music.
Quick after that he was introduced to dance music and from the age of 17 he started going to dance parties. The energy of this music inspired him to get his first set of turntables and that started a music ride that never stopped. After playing with vinyl for over 4 years, he started looking for better ways to express his musical creativity. This led towards the switch to Ableton Live. Allowing him to ad self produced loops and samples to his sets and make them more diverse.
In 2006, at the age of 19, he moved to Amsterdam. For over 3 years he organised dance events under the label Null as co-founder of Null-Events. It was here where he became a really skilful Dj. The gigs at his own events taught him to create his own unique sound and to master the interaction with the crowd. From that moment on, he got more and more gigs and he turned international as well. One of his most memorable performances was closing down the Distortion Festival in Copenhagen, together with Kreutzmann at the Klashy stage.
So far, under the name Black Pillow and several aliases, he played in respected places like; Studio 80, Supperclub, TWSTD, Club Poema, The Stubnitz Boat, Distortion Festival ‘09, ’10, '11 & '12 (Copenhagen) and the Razzmatazz (Barcelona).
In 2011 he moved to Copenhagen. Together with his new manger/booker, he quickly conquered the capital of Denmark. With bookings at respected places like TS Bar, Simons, Bakken, KB3 and residencies at Umami and TS, he is becoming an established name in the Copenhagen nightlife.
