I was trying to get that 'come around the fire next to grandpa' feeling. Except he's playing the piano AND some live z3ta+ synths at the same time. It's basically me in about 50 years.

@bjporter: Anyways, I did find the following more free plugs for sidechaining: FL4TT3RY, Density mkII, Compressive Pro, and ReaComp. Compressive is 64bit. All are very nice. DualComp is another, but it sucked on my machine. :D

@Gary Afterlife: Ya unfortunately on these contests you cannot use commercial plugs. I would use Cubase Compressor (which has external sidechain input).

@bjporter: Not sure about free-ware although if you use fruity just use the peak controller with the proper routing it does a great job. :)

@Gary Afterlife: Yes!! Thanks for keeping it real Shane. If I had about 30 more minutes I would have sidechained it. I agree - the bassline is crap in this track. I almost uploaded it, and realized - crap, there's no bassline.... Do you know any Free Sidechain compressors besides Slim Slow Slider, and Compressive?

So this is the bassline? - i think it needs some more definition. It seems to punch through but overpowers the kick. Give the kick and bassline some more definition and balance it out. Maybe some side chaining can tighten things up a little :)

@steveosiris: Nah you were right, there's some crap going on in the mixing, but now I think of it the distorted percussion was a bit silly. Thanks a lot for keeping it real man :)

@bjporter: Than maybe the distorted percussion is the thing here. I thought about saying something about the distorted "drum loop" but then I didn't. Good luck! :)
- bjporter
bjporter at 1.41 on September 02, 2011 11:44
@bjporter: Oh also the percussion is really distorted, because I used 'Heavy' distortion FX from z3ta on it... and the bitcrusher a tad

@steveosiris: Thanks 3ee, this is the part I hope people consider the most with this tune, since it's not fully mixed yet :D :D
- bjporter
bjporter at 1.41 on September 02, 2011 11:32
@steveosiris: Yeah tell me about it. Actually the mixing is crap at this point, because I started the work too late. I needed about another hour to fix this. I forgot to automate the lows off everything but bass + kick, so there's clashing there, and likewise at the mid/high too a bit.

Seems a bit trashy or some tones seem to cause over-compression. Other than that, nice classic trance vibe.

Very nice intro + the piano emulation is pretty good as well. :)

The reverb was TAL-Reverb 2, and really enhances the sound. Oh and I could only play lower/mid notes because it didn't sound as 'realistic' on higher notes - it sounded more like Rhodes or something.

@satya: Hey man, yeah I'll definitely upload the patches! Some background on that - The piano sound I used 2 instances of z3ta, and split it so one instance does low, rich notes, and another instance does the plunky sound (but very low volume). For the rich notes, I figure a piano has multiple strings for each hammer, so I used about 3 to 4 oscillators, each detuned, and at different octaves. I had to use the modulation matrix a bit too.... er I better stop here .... you'll see with the patch
