Recorded February 26, 2009. One of my first field recordings of Shanghai last year. I had to run an errand in Pudong and I had some time on my hands so I wandered around the promenade.

It was lightly raining and cold but it felt very peaceful. A heavy rain had just passed so many people were still inside. A few tourists braved the rain and were wandering around me talking. The passing cargo and construction boats can be heard, seagulls, and even a clock tower in the distance indicated time.

This recording, now that I listen to it one year later is still amazing to see how much of my current recording style is heard even before I developed it:

The layering of sounds to capture distance, the sound of Shanghainese dialect, the distinct sounds of the location (birds, boats), and most importantly, the concept of time is captured through the ringing of the bells at a clocktower across the river in the Bund- four dimensions in one take.

This is one of the best examples of what I try to capture in my recordings. What still, and always will, intrigue me about field recording is that I only have the power to capture and not to control- and that's the beauty of it.
