I first came across Sue Anne Tay's website Shanghai Street Stories while seeing a photo of her's on the Shanghaiist website.
Her photos were amazing and showed a raw, real, and honest quality to the streets in where they were taken- qualities that I try to also embody in my own recordings.
After weeks of back and forth we finally were able to meet and walk through a location together. We went to two locations that day: Zhou shan Lu and a location near Ding hai Lu, near Fuxing Island where we saw a group of older men flying bird shaped kites.
Since the Zhou Shan Lu soundwalk was around lunchtime, the sounds of cooking and table conversations were the most predominant. The street itself was more or less a market street which had a lot of life on this beautiful spring day.
The field where the kite flyers were had construction along the river front. You can hear it under the occasional conversations between the kite masters.
The kite-flyers were documented and posted on the Shanghai Street Stories website here:
This track is one of 5 files from that day.
