15/09/09 NEWER ANNOUNCEMENT!!! - Mr Bish and Parker Airspace are pleased to announce the arrival of their new collaborative SoundCloud Page @ /parkerairbish. Stream the first track "Iona" now; more to come soon!

12/09/09 Announcement: My own website http://mrbishmusic.com is now live - check it out, and leave me a comment!

These are a selection of demos I've put together for myself and to present song ideas to my band Ely.

Ely's tunes are also available on Ely's soundcloud profile. I'm not your attorney, but I advise you to visit it and have a listen. You'll find a link in the list of people I'm following.

I like to experiment, so don't judge my music on one particular tune - there's something for... Well, not everyone, but it's fairly eclectic stuff, if I do say so myself (and I do).

Oh and the newest stuff is at the bottom, old stuff at the top.

Thanks for listening.

Heya Spud. Sounds awesome! Just let it go and call it "done enough."

      2. Spuddley on June 06, 2009 20:14

@starkaudio: I may do that. I might fix up the drums at some point. Not much time for it these days.

Ok, I am not a guitar soloist. I decided to challenge myself with this because I think a solo fits the piece musically.

      2. GeminEye on May 05, 2009 10:38

@Spuddley: The solo in here IS touching, nice work

It always is a good idea to try this kind of things with DAWs imho, so props for that. In this case, maybe the drum section is too repetitive, it could use some pauses or a different pattern. It is important to change patterns and rhythms often in instrumental rock(ish) tracks.

      2. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 03:31

@narcofunk: You are very right about the drums.

I was actually expecting the solo to be built out further here, or a build-up in the drum work

      2. Spuddley on May 05, 2009 20:24

@GeminEye: I hear ya. Its just not my skillset. I am working on it.

also , try simple Bass solo with no Drums or a key change narco is right be as diverse and changeable as possible

      2. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 02:39

@django365: Good idea. I may try that when I get back.

      3. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 21:45

I love the delay here, how did you get it? Its really obvious the work thats gone into this, I think you have more patience than me with the programming and mixing, I just want to get things out there, but you make sure theyre pretty damn perfect before you do. I love the bass in this thing, im working only with acoustic guitar at the moment, hence my current theme. Top tune.

      2. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 21:54

@chezceleste: The delay is abelton live's pingpong delay set at 25% wet on the 3rd beat. Although I do put some effort into equalizing the different parts, I don't feel like I know what I am doing yet. There many here that craft each note so much more, it is humbling. I do think your tracks are excellent. You are a better musician than I. You also have a good feel for how to create mood and interest with acoustic instruments that makes me jealous. You might want to pick up a bass and see what happens with your stuff. It makes my life a lot easier when I try and achieve some balance.

      3. chezceleste on April 17, 2009 22:02

@Spuddley: I sorely miss my bass, it was my first proper instrument, and out of the ones I have, its the best quality (fender aerodyne) but im living in Rome at the mo, and could only bring the one geetar. I miss things like distortion and delay and noise. sigh.

      4. Spuddley on April 20, 2009 13:27

        @Spuddley: Oops. I lied, the dry/wet varies between 25% and 40%

really nice! i love the echo on the guitar strumming here it's really nice. (maybe it's not an effect? either way- good work it's a very uplifting sound.)

I enjoy the sound, but i think the song is a bit repetitive. I have the same problem, i know how it is :) Try changing moods, gettin' a little sick or a little angry with the drumming or the distortions, you have endless possibilities. The synth also could be better, it kinda stands out and doesn't fit the rest too much.

      2. Spuddley on April 15, 2009 04:44

@narcofunk: I think I will mess with the drums a bit. Here is the problem. I am lazy, and in a hurry. The synth in akoustik piano. perhaps I should try a lead?

      3. narcofunk on April 15, 2009 19:23

@Spuddley: Maybe a synth, maybe some distortion, maybe some glitchin'.. i dunno, i would just try :) And btw i was talkin' about the synths that starts around 3:50, it's a bit too dry/rough, maybe some further processing, like envelope filter and delay, would make it sound more convincing.

      4. GeminEye on May 05, 2009 10:40

@Spuddley: A quicker but brief piano solo from time to time could give this track a lot more body

      2. GeminEye on May 05, 2009 10:42

@Lush Puppy: Me too. I think this is a track with a lot of good ideas and a nice mood, but it needs some streamlining into a single idea.

      3. Spuddley on May 05, 2009 20:31

Man. Don´t say things like " I am posting pencil sketches". I listened to this song and I read your words (leaving th etown) and so I say: It is a great work! You describe your situation and this situation postulates a groove without break and changes. You have stress and youe music also has stress. So you did not paint a picture but told in music, what you tried to write with letters. This track is perfect, because perfect is, what is reality. (And the reality is perfect?)

@Michael Klatte: Thanks for the encouragement. I do think I am a long way from where I want to be. But you are right. At some point you have to respect the creative process enough to stop re-engineering and let others listen. After all, this is art, not engineering.

      4. django365 on April 16, 2009 21:46

@Spuddley: Also the groove is the song

      5. GeminEye on May 05, 2009 10:45

@Spuddley: I tend to notice that when I listen to my own tracks after not having heard them for a long time, I catch myself digging the track a lot more than when I just made it. And yeah, kind of agree with the original comment here :)

Good luck, and try to not be too hasty to finish this, you've got plenty of time. In the meantine, try to listen a lot of different things to understand how others work their music out. Considering your inclination towards post-rock, i'd say give a listen to people who did it differently, like Long Fin Killie and Storm & Stress(they were not instrumental bands, but they can be of great inspiration). Cheers!

      2. Spuddley on April 15, 2009 04:41

@narcofunk: Thanks for the comments. You are right about the hurried effort. Time is a little short for me. I am about to leave town for a while (a long while) so for some reason I felt like wrapping some things up before I go. I am leaving my guitars behind, so this should force me into a synth mode, which should cause me to get more into engineering the grooves, instead of just playing along. I hope to dig into these synths that I have spent all this money on! Thanks again.

Loving this. So much. Nothing wrong with being all over the map, I think it works. On a geeky side-note, you're a logic user too then? That bass sounds suspiciously like the attitude electric bass patch (which I use a lot!).

Just a suggestion - this change from acoustic to distorted might go a bit smoother with either a bit of reversed verb on the guitars to lead it in, or maybe a synth or something doing a bit of a wooosh - it's a cheap trick, but helps with this kind of gear change.... Otherwise, this track is absolutely gorgeous: I doff my hat to you and H.o.a.P.

Mike sent me this track & I rocked out with Ultrabeat... & pretty much maxed out the levels as much as I could. Hyper tuned the vocals to give it some edge...
