These are a selection of demos I've put together for myself and to present song ideas to my band Ely.
Ely's tunes are also available on Ely's soundcloud profile. I'm not your attorney, but I advise you to visit it and have a listen. You'll find a link in the list of people I'm following.
I like to experiment, so don't judge my music on one particular tune - there's something for... Well, not everyone, but it's fairly eclectic stuff, if I do say so myself (and I do).
Oh and the newest stuff is at the bottom, old stuff at the top.
Thanks for listening.
Awesome. Love this.
Hi, thanks for the kind words! It was really just an experiment in seeing how many different chords I could squeeze into one piece! The drum sounds come from FXPansion's BFD2, with the kit heavily tweaked - snare and toms tuned up a bit and deadened... It's a great plugin, but pretty damned expensive, takes up a lot of space, and isnt terribly versatile... Still, you can get a lot out of it if you're willing to experiment, so it's worth a look if you can find a demo or something.
@Spuddley: thanks! It's just Cadd9 Em7 and D, but there's a little F# G A run added in to jazz it up - when I wrote it (all those long years ago) I was intrigued that those three notes sounded very different when you played them first over the C and then over the E - obvious really, now I'm older and wiser, but back then it was a bit of a revelation, that harmonic context can really change the flavour of a group of notes... Listen to me harping on like I know what I'm talking about... Too much wine!
@Spuddley: Are you making a cheeky point or being serious? There's the classic Metallica track by the same name - I've never been much of a fan of Metallica, so if I've ripped that off, it was purely accidental - but let me know if I have!
@Spuddley: I can hear where GeminEye is coming from... I love it, sounds gorgeous... Where do you get off still calling yourself an amateur!?
Loving this. So much. Nothing wrong with being all over the map, I think it works. On a geeky side-note, you're a logic user too then? That bass sounds suspiciously like the attitude electric bass patch (which I use a lot!).
Just a suggestion - this change from acoustic to distorted might go a bit smoother with either a bit of reversed verb on the guitars to lead it in, or maybe a synth or something doing a bit of a wooosh - it's a cheap trick, but helps with this kind of gear change.... Otherwise, this track is absolutely gorgeous: I doff my hat to you and H.o.a.P.
Fuck yeah! Awesome.
@griff: Cheers griff! Wish you could hear the melody it's all set to. I'll find out from Parker Airspace if he minds me sharing the finished mix later this weekend...
@Spuddley: You deleted your comment about needing a singer!? You're quite right, all my tracks are missing vocals. The frustrating thing is I have a very talented singer-friend, but he's never got free time to record... Might have to start doing the vocals myself (cringe)...
@Spuddley: That's funny, I was tired and wasted and just bashing the keys semi-randomly. I played it back and thought it sounded terrible, and was about to delete it when I thought 'sod it' and decided to leave it in... Still a little bit too much 'feel' (or lack thereof) for my tastes, but it's at least not quite as bad as I first thought... Nice that it didn't go unnoticed though!
Nice! Thought I knew where you were going and then suddenly this. Lovely...
@Mr. Squirrel: Never mate, I'm always open for constructive criticism. Have to agree with you, the rhodes part has much more going for it. Just included the original piano part as the intro to stretch the track out a bit - I always feel I'm wasting an upload from my quota if I put something up that's only a minute or so long, especially when it's just a rough sketch like this...
@Spuddley: You're right, lazy hurried mix, just set levels and hit bounce! I think it probably needs a bit of fader riding to even it out a bit... Might redo it at the weekend. Ta very much for the nice words and the (incredibly helpful and always welcome) constructive criticism!
@Spuddley: Tough to say... I can appreciate its all-out awesomeness for making loop-based music, and if I was going to do a club set somewhere, I wouldn't hesitate to use it, but I can't really write with it - the Midi/Audio Units side of it is useful but doesn't really come as intuitively to me as it does using a sequencer (but that's probably just cause I'm not used to it). Ultimately I think I'll stick with writing on Logic, but will consider using Ableton for gigs with my band, since it's an easy (and stable) way of incorporating loops etc without basically just playing to backing tracks (I don't like it when bands do that). It's definitely a good tool to have in your arsenal though.
@Lucid Colony: Meh, it's still not quite perfect - there isn't quite enough sparkle in the top end, and the snare hits the bus compression slightly too hard... But I'm no mastering engineer! So thanks :D
@kepler: Ta very much! :D
Wow.
Love these pulsey cuts from the original. Also, "Yesterday, two colours tried to say"!?!
also, gorgeous mix all round, nice and tight.
Awesome stuff, a real journey this one...
@recoveryUnit: Thanks, it's just the basic Steinway samples that come with Logic, but with an awful lot of compression, some heavy EQing and a touch of my favourite (homemade) reverb impulse. I use it a lot, cause like you say, it cuts through, without sounding too Elton John jangly!
Silence is golden ;)
Fuck yeah.
Nice manipulation with the vocal. Funky.
Feeling this. I spent 7hrs trying to polish my turd of a Reckoner remix before trashing the lot. So glad I did, because this wipes the floor with what I was doing...
Knew it was coming, but that pitched down beat is spot on. Dirty.
Normally, I'm not a big DnB fan, but that kit is really, really good.
Yes. Yes very much. Me likey.
Very dubby... So many moods in the same piece! Cracking!
Woah! Totally switched that beat up! It had been so interesting up to that point, I thought you were bound to just repeat yourself, but instead you just turned it up a notch! Really liking this...
