Songwriter Cody Weathers describes Bill as “like listening to Leonard Cohen trying out new music at sound check, hushed, intimate and thoughtful.” In a soulful, unfortunately authentic, whiskey soaked baritone, Bill tells unconventional stories about loss, losers and life. Citing Cohen, as well as Steve Forbert, John Hiatt, Jay Farrar, Guy Clark and, of course, Bob Dylan, as influences, Bill’s music also reflects his love of punk, pop and traditional country.
Bill grew up in rural Colorado, listening to the early country music loved by his father, including such artists as the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Snow and Earnest Tubb. While attending the University of Kansas in the early 1980s, Bill supplied rhythm guitar and lead vocals for the Lawrence band “EYM,” for whom he was also the principal songwriter. The band broke up when three of the four members headed off in different directions for graduate schools and higher paying day jobs. After graduating Law School at the University of Michigan, Bill began a legal career during which he clerked for a federal judge, became a litigation partner at a large Midwest law firm, then a death penalty defense counsel at a public interest non-profit and, presently, a sports and entertainment lawyer based in Kansas City, Missouri. When he is not fleecing clients, evicting windows and rolling naked in stacks of cash, he is writing, recording and performing his songs.
