Jacoby "Big DAWG" Johnson is somewhat of an oxymoron, he's the same, yet different. Growing up in a single parent household in South Dallas, a predominantly black and impoverished part of the city, "the hood", his mother who was born and raised in South Dallas wanted him to know there was more available to him than his immediate surroundings. "She sent me to school in North Dallas with the white kids because she wanted me to get a good education so I could have a chance at a better life than she had." Needless to say growing up in two wildly different socioeconomic environments was not an easy task. "I was too black for the white kids and too white for the black kids, I didn't fit in at school or at home." "I had to learn how to adapt to both." It's his ability to adapt to any situation or circumstance that has molded him into the person he is today.

His music is reflective of his adaptive personality, in just one track you can feel the essence of the neighborhood he grew up in as well as the life he lives outside of that stereotype. "I'm a nigga and a nerd, the nigga is the hood shit and the nerd is all the other stuff." The "nigga" and the "nerd" go together about as well as chocolate and peanut butter when it comes to his up tempo high energy, highly aggressive and sometimes offensive music. His musical influences range from Eminem to Johnny Cash and everything in between. "As far is influences go I pretty much like the same rappers most people do; Biggie, Pac, Eminem, Jay-z, Nas, Lupe, Kanye, and so on and so on." "If you wanna be great you study the greats."

His passion for creating music began to develop in high school when he started freestyling before, during and after school. "My friends were like, you're good at that, so I kept doing it." As he kept at it his love for the genre grew fast and his abilities grew as well. He also got his name in high school, well officially that is. "People would randomly call me big dog in everyday life like, excuse me big dog or thanks big dog, I dunno, guess I just look like a dog." He took the title and ran with it, changing it to DAWG which is an acronym for Dreams Ambitions Wishes Goals. "It embodies everything I'm about." Eventually he became a part of a rap group and started doing little shows around Dallas. The group had little success before new management came in and made them all solo artists. As a solo act Big DAWG has had much success growing his brand and building a small buzz. He's had shows in various cities outside of his home state of Texas and has left lasting impressions on a slue of club djs and online radio djs and various people in the music industry. "I'm in grind mode." "Make good music and get it to as many people as possible."

With a handful of singles under his belt and a demo cd that's flooding the underground, his new upcoming project is shaping up to be something that will officially announce his presence in the rap world and solidify his spot as a serious contender. "I feel like when it drops and people hear it they'll realize that this is not a hobby and that I'm serious about what I do and that I belong here." The need to belong is something he's felt since childhood growing up in two separate worlds. Wanting to be accepted is something everyone's felt at some point in their life whether they admit it or not. His music is relatable and familiar yet different and exciting. Big DAWG, Dreams Ambitions Wishes Goals, the best has yet to come.
