Decided I would practice a bit today, and to me, practice means write a riff, track it, and process it. Just like I used to do in 2010.

The difference is that this time, I used my new KRK Rokit 5 monitors to mix the recording. So far, I'm thoroughly impressed by these little guys, and they've given me outstanding results thus far. Plus, it's amazing what you can do when you're awake; I went through and completely fixed the whole mix. No more booming!

I also designed a new tone for this one, like I used to do. I went with a simple approach, unlike the tone in "A Case of the Brutals," and used a crossover gate, a TS808 block, a Peavey 5150, and a Marshall 1960A cabinet outfitted with Greenbacks, mic'd by both a Royer 121 and an SM57 (Royer 121 further back than the SM57 and pointed off-axis). Absolutely no compression on the guitar tracks. Played on an Ibanez RG321MH.

The bass tone is the same compression setup used in "Fix You" (yet to be released) without the Guitar Rig instance turned on. It consists of Kramer Master Tape, S1's Compressor, S1's Limiter, Ozone 5 Dynamics, and S1's Pro EQ. I used a pre-fader send to create a drive track, using Pro EQ and KMT, driving both tape and tube electronics. Both tracks go into Guitar Rig 5, where I used an 8x10 Ampeg cab mic'd by an Audix D6, and compressed/drove the output with KMT's "Bass Fingered Rock" preset. Played on a vintage Gibson Grabber G-3.

The drums are a modified Avatar kit in Superior Drummer 2.0, using Ozone 5 and S1 effects for processing. There is sidechaining on the OHs and room mics using both the kick and snare total tracks as sources. I used NI Vintage Compressors and Transient Master on the kick and snare to get some more punch out of what was a Coldplay preset I made. KMT and Ozone 5 Dynamics are used on the drums bus.

All of this was written, tracked and processed within four hours using PreSonus Studio One 2 Pro and a PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL, monitored with KRK RP5 G2s. The platform is a Dell XPS L502x running Windows 7 x64.
