Guess what! Guitar Rig 4 sounds INCREDIBLE compared to Guitar Rig 3. So I replaced all GR3 instances with exact copies made in GR4! The difference is like night and day.

While I was at it, I fixed a bass resonance problem, revamped the vocal EQ, replaced digital delay with tape echo on vocals, added tube compression on the kick and snare, and drove the crap out of Ozone's tube sim on the drum overheads (compressing the corresponding bands down for a bigger sound). This is ALMOST a brand new mix! Now all I have to do is replace the current DIs with ones that don't suck and re-track vocals.

While I'm on the topic of vocals in particular, I want to make clear that I did, out of over-optimism, write a song that's too high for me to sing. I don't know if I will ever be able to hit the high Ab consistently or not. I managed to a couple times in the original tracks, but not very well (then again, I didn't sing very much well in this song to begin with), leaving me to pitch correct it into position. What I'm going to end up doing to 1) make the new tracks sound like me in 2010 and 2) give the vocals the power they need on the Ab is track the new vocal tracks in B major, then use Melodyne to pitch them up to Db major. I know, I know, that's faking it, but what else can I do? I HAVE to make the song sound like it does in my head, or I'm going to go nuts. This is a forewarning that in Hindsight v3, the tracks will in fact be pitched up 2 semitones using a pitch correction program. However, I will do less correction on the vocals, because when I'm able to sing a song consistently, I actually sound pretty dang good. I just write songs that I want to sing, making it extremely difficult for me to sing my own songs. I apologize for resorting to faking the high notes, but it's the only way possible at this point in time to actually make them sound good. Maybe with some voice training and practice, I'll eventually be able to perform the song the way it was intended. Until then, however, I can't properly sing this one.

On a cheerier note, this track's release here is a sign... a sign of wondrous things to come! I'm buying Guitar Rig 5 Pro + Kontrol in a little less than two weeks, meaning that I'll have REDWIREZ IMPULSES AT MY DISPOSAL "in the studio" and all the effects and amps I could ever dream of at my feet on stage. I'm terribly excited for this huge milestone in my guitar-playing career; I finally get to use effects processing and amp modeling that sounds good! If anyone here does in fact see me play live a lot, get pumped--I'm about to start sounding unreal!
