Kicking off the new decade by landing a DJ residency at Sao Paulo’s
underground hotspot Vegas, disco-house specialist Benjamin Ferreira
has also just started his production career with equally impressive
effect, remixing Faze Action’s ‘Danae Journey’ with production partner
Erico Theobaldo under the alias Boogie Central.

Though the original first came out on the London disco stars’ album
last year, Faze Action love Benjamin and Erico’s old skool style, cowbell laden
version so much they’ve decided to release it this June, just a month
before Benjamin heads to Lisbon, Porto, London and Berlin for his debut European
tour. In the meantime, he remains busy consolidating his standing as
one of Sao Paulo’s ones-to-watch DJs, having just been nominated by DJ
Magazine as one of Brazil’s ‘best breakthrough DJs of 2009’ in the
magazine’s latest annual polls.

Passionate about disco, he’s equally enthusiastic about house music
though like all serious DJs is quick to reject restrictions. A vinyl
fanatic, he’s equally comfortable mixing from Ableton and CDs,
reflecting his passion for playing the perfect track at the perfect

“I've always listened to different kinds of music, so what I try is to
mix as many different references as possible in a coherent way and
according to the crowd I have on the floor,” says Benjamin. “That can
be disco, house, techno, afro, or Latino,” he says, “It's all about
balancing the music I love and what I'll think will please my
audience. I usually say that I may not play everything I love, but I
love everything I play,” he smiles.

Learning to DJ aged 11 (after being inspired by listening to the
records of two DJ uncles in his hometown of Belém in the Amazon) he
kicked off his professional career six years later at his local Belém
gay club, going on to DJ at his first outdoor rave in 1999 (with green
hair). Soon after he teamed up with Pragatecno, a Brazilwide
collective dedicated to popularizing underground dance music beyond
Rio and Sao Paulo, inviting the likes of DJ Marky and Renato Cohen to
play their first Amazon gigs.

While local press and TV leaped on board with euphoric coverage of the
region’s first electronic music scene, psy-trance gradually started
edging out all other genres and in 2006 Benjamin relocated to Brazil’s
cultural capital Sao Paulo.

Four years on he’s played most of Sao Paulo’s biggest clubs (including
Pacha, D-Edge and brand new uber-club du jour Hot Hot) spreading his
gospel of serious dance music, or disco, as he prefers to call it.

“Disco's been a part of my life since the very beginning, it’s
definitely been my first and most important school and was already there
when I played a 134-bpm remake of In Deep's ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My
Life’ or Robert Hood sampling Kool & The Gang 5 or 10 years ago. It’s
like the air I breathe - I don't think about it, I just breathe.”
