About
Ben Cissell aka "Benergy" has been a lover of all EDM since 1991. His first discovery was the Mortal Kombat game's soundtrack performed by The Immortals. He quickly discovered many other forms of electronic music through a local non-profit radio show called "The Hitch Hikers Dance Guide" on WEVL. The only way he knew how to collect this type music was to tape the weekly show. He soon became involved in the Memphis rave scene where his highly energetic attitude gave him the nickname that would later become his DJ name. Expanding his genres of interest included techno, ambient, big beat, acid house, trip hop, and early trance. His favorite artists included The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, Death in Vegas, Forest for the Trees, Plastikman, The Chemical Brothers, DJ Icey, Moby, Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, BT, Paul Oakenfold, Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, and Orbital.
Benergy began DJing and party promoting in 2007. Mixing mostly electro house, techno, nuskool breaks, and psytrance. Most of his parties were that of small club venues and large house parties.
In 2011, Benergy began producing his own brand of dance music. He experimented with a few different styles, including drum n bass, hardcore, and minimal techno, with the latter being his favorite. Benergy's style of minimal techno could best be described as tribal beats with progressions of synthetic and percussive rides while a main bass and very low sub bass hold everything together. All of his tracks are created for very long mixes on both the front end and back.
In early 2012, Benergy signed on with Freaquewave Records, a Memphis-based label that showcases local artists of all styles of electronica. His first single was an liquid drum n' bass piece titled "Buddah." Shortly after, a four track EP titled "Earworm" was released featuring all minimal songs with a large emphasis on bass. On this EP, the songs Earworm, Obelisk, Numb, and Minimal Overdrive can be heard.
