Beeske is a Japanese web-based musician whose works are compared with Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Beat Happening and Beck by late Downloadcom Music. Beeske insists however, that he is not willing to commit suicide at this moment and that his main influences are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Sex Pistols and Beastie Boys instead. Guitars are main instrument on Beeske’s music, but he does not seem to be interested in the skillful play. Although playing all instruments by himself, Beeske is not a Paul McCartney-Stevie Wonder-Prince type musician, he is rather similar to those Lo-fi musicians in his play style. On this point of view he once expressed his humble sympathy to the musicians like Daniel Johnston, Violent Femmes and The Pastels.
Beeske has actually a long career as a musician and his entire catalogues are distributed in the Last.fm website for free. He made a virtual debut when he was 16 years old as a member of a band in the late 80’s and produced over a dozen albums (the official website of this band is being prepared). In the summer of 1993 he suddenly made his solo debut album “Cheer Up Sleepy Sun” under the influence of a Japanese shibuya-kei legend Flipper’s Guitar and their solo projects as 小沢健二 (Kenji Ozawa) and Cornelius. He started to write Japanese lyrics in that period and continued throughout the 90’s. The debut album draws a fine picture of fragile nature of summer, especially the latter 4 songs of the album are worth a hearing; "水族館の午後 (Aquariumic Afternoon)", "死の雲 (The Cloud of Death)", "青い花 (Flower in Blue)" and "ハート (Heart)".
In the next year Beeske yeilded another album of his early solo career, “Kaiketsu Yamitarou”. There was a revival fad of a 70’s Japanese rock band はっぴいえんど (Happy End) in Japanese music scene at that time, Beeske was also influenced by that. Also he once commented that on that album he tried to grab the essence of two contrastive nature of The Beach Boys’s God Only Knows and Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally. Although few people agree to its achievement, songs like “春は来ぬ (Spring Has Come)”, “空雷 (Kalalai)”, “迷軒風 (Mei Ken Foo)” and “Momo” are recommended for listening.
After taking five from making solo albums, Beeske published his third solo album in 2005. The album “Over The Hills And Far Away” was released digitally for the first time and gained thousands of listenings on the web. Beeske served his official website "Beeske Webcast" and re-start his solo artist career as a web-based musician. In “Over The Hills And Far Away”, almost all songs achieved large numbers of listenings and applause, yet “Hi”, “Yoru no Yami Kara (From the Dark of Night)”, “It’s Not Over” and “It Snows” were notably popular among them.
In 2008, again Beeske released an album online. This “Summer Bits” album has not yet achieved a relative success compared with the former album, however it contains some songs that can heed listeners’ attentions. “From The Earth 2 The Space”, “The First Monday of August”, “Destiny” or “Surprise Party” may be one of them.
Beeske once said his motto in making music is ‘Be short. Be dry’. However his music is emotional and sometimes even described as a groan from somewhere dark. This writer, named Braincell DeBeeske, thinks that it is the fine blend of alternative rock and catchy-ness of J-Pop that distinguishes Beeske from other singer-songwriters.
