    AFRIKANER BARISTA

Here again, here again, here again, here again

Swept in with the rush of revenants
    who need to get amphetamized
    Some mistake you for Australian
You correct the ones you like

Here again, here again, here again, here again

    The wit is closely calibrated
to summon out a blushing smile
I know exactly where you're from but
I wanna be the one you like

    African African
    Afrikaner barista

Here again, here again, here again, here again

    Blood bloody subjugation
    The history between us now
    But origin's not destination
    You gotta move on somehow

    African African
    Afrikaner barista
    barista

I wanna be the one you like...

@propagandery: Thanks for the kind words! RE: scoring: we've done one score for a theater piece (http://bit.ly/K2xAem) and we're excited to continue down that path.

In fact, I have an enduring fantasy of contributing music to Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" sequel. It's just a fantasy, but it's a nice one.

Man, I can't wait for these releases. It's very cool to trace a line from the first time A Good Day playing in the background stopped me in my tracks to once again feeling that stirring, that hair on the back of the neck rising up feeling. Thank you for your work!

I love the way you peel the layers of a "triplet onion" in this song and the chorus in particular. Mathematic and intellectual musically, but still groovy - hard to balance those characteristics.

And it begins...the cliff you fall back off of and this anthemic embrace enveloping you all the way down.

@tereutereu: Thanks so much for the kind words. Although Trent Reznor is definitely not an influence on our music --- not dissing his work, just not that familiar with it! --- I respect him as a serious artist whose work means a lot to people. And I've personally never heard Dirty Projectors. I know that Jean is a fan and I'm sure she'll be flattered by the comparison. I've been meaning to check them out! Thanks again!

This part is so Trent Reznor in the best way. The whole track kinda has a Reznor does Dirty Projectors vibe. It's a really fantastically textured, mutated, funky feel all the way through.

@livingbasshead: Thanks for the observation and encouraging words. With pop songs, you sometimes have to condense complex ideas. No room for undue exposition. So it's a discipline of conjuring shade and insinuation. Thankfully melody, texture, rhythm are there to support this... or I'd be fucked. :)

I've read these lyrics several times now. It's quite amazing how you manage to paint the picture, get the subject material right on the button and invoke emotional connection in so few words. You have a natural gift as both wordsmith and musician / producer.

The intro reminds me a bit of Think Tree with more slink, and less frenetics. Groovy!

The dog bowl thing would be great in a 5.1 mix ;-)
As for the lyric, I may well throw that into casual conversation in the near future...

@livingbasshead: Most times when you hear a sound in the new BP music and you wonder "What is that sound?" the answer is usually: dogbowl. A whole world of textures can be found in a dog's metal water bowl.

@livingbasshead: @livingbasshead: Thanks. That line is so simple, I had to look up whether I had heard or read it somewhere else. I thought "Surely this is a quote I'm stealing from *someone* and I've just forgotten the source." But so far, I have not found the source. So I think I coined it. (If someone can prove me wrong, I'll gladly cop to it!)

Wow - so much work has gone into this track. If this is a typical taster of the new album, no wonder it's been so long (health issues excluded). I'm interested to know if the groove inspired the lyrics to this track? Either way it fits and works. I hope 'Ann The Word' makes it to the new album...
