About

Their collective passion and drive to create music filled with atmosphere and vivid acoustic texture has led this 6 strong band to the original sound of the
Beatrix Players. With its folk, rock & classical influences, this sound has captured the interest of the judges at The Peoples Music Awards progressing them to the third and final round of the 2011 Global competition: “A very interesting and extremely original song. Keep up the writing, this is very intriguing stuff.”
Mick Glossop, Producer (Judge – Peoples Music Awards 2011). Beatrix Players are regularly compared to the likes of Tori Amos, Kate Bush and PJ Harvey. You will find them playing in many venues across London this summer, kicking it off with a showcase at the Blackheath Halls, London, 15th April.

Why take the time to listen?

It’s not every day that you see a band perform with cello, piano, flute, acoustic guitar, double bass, drums and a plethora of vocal tones and harmonies. With a polished performance and a look of sheer determination to prove that real music can shine, this band has an energy that makes you sit up and take note.
The Beatrix Players sound is shaped by the distinctive voice of Amy White. “Amy’s voice is full of character and intensity” Mick Glossop, Producer (Judge – Peoples Music Awards 2011).

Their songs are a collaboration, written by Amy White (lead vocal), Tom Manning (guitar) and Jess Kennedy (piano, flute and vocals), currently being created faster than they can be recorded. Tom’s intricate melodies take you back to a time of Nick Drake and early Simon and Garfunkel and Jess’ passion for film and classical music gives the writing added power and emotion that really emanates on stage. Amy writes of rage, fantasy, alienation and confusion of everyday life and the emotional strain of the glass ceiling and never stops thinking of new melodies, both for the voice and strings. “Well constructed lyrics...well matched with instrumentation! Lovely approach - good combination of instruments and styles. Very Polished Performance.” Simon Care, Musician, agent and manager (Judge – Peoples Music Awards 2011).

Brother and sister, Amanda & David Alvarez, furnish the lower frequencies of the Beatrix sound, providing catchy riffs and rhythms on cello and bass/ double bass. The Beatrix Players introduce the cello to the front of the stage, where Amanda’s passion for music emanates in resonating melody. All cemented by the creative percussion and drums of Emilio Vanni.

The debut album by the Beatrix Players will be heading for completion by the end of summer with plenty more tracks being added to the note book for future endeavours.

“Unpolished Pearl is one of those songs that combine innovative, elegant, interesting and multiple influences. Starting with a modern folk approach, the song grows in intensity with excellent production, differentiating each verse with an intelligent and elegant staccato/ legato contrast.”
