This is a snippet from BBC Radio 1 Stories: 808s, 303s & 909s which broadcasts at 9pm GMT, Monday 11th March on Radio 1.

Kutski discovers how three small electronic boxes from the 1980's sculpted the sound of both Hip-Hop and Dance music. He makes it his mission to track down the team that worked on the Roland 808, 303 and 909 machines to see if they had any idea that their inventions would have such a massive influence on contemporary music.

He finds out how they played a massive role in the development of hip-hop and the rise of Trap. They form the basis of house and techno and the tons of sub-genres that have spawned from these. Kutski chats to legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier, Richie Hawtin, A Guy Called Gerald, The 2Bears and Alex Metric, as well as his fellow Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ’s on his quest to finds out why producers around the globe continue to be obsessed with these sounds more than three decades after they were first created.
