The story of this mix
The idea behind spacescape is to turn the listener into a participant. This means that the music has been carefully combined to take you on a journey, which is different every time you listen to it, since your state of mind will be different each time. As spacescape, I try to get into the state of a shaman DJ, to help the participant (formerly known as listener) find the states and experiences they need to find. Oh, and participating can be done passively and actively, even while sleeping.
For this mix I decided to start with fair ground music turned into something eerie, immediately taking the participant out of a state in which one is listening to music through a frame of expectation and repetition. The Shambhala sounds which help transfer to Ride the Wave, offer a gloomy suspense, which is slowly released by the sounds following, so that the participant is primed for Terrence McKenna's wise words, contained in Capsula's 'Ride The Wave'.
This suspense is than used a tool, for when Shpongle's 'Electroplasm' comes in, the participant is really launched into the full experience of this mix. If you pay attention, you can hear the music building up and accelerating before the kick off.
Mulholland Dub offers an uptempo, but laid-back space for mild relaxation, to counter the previous Shpongle track. I chose to incorporate a song with 'ethno' sounds, to give the whole experience a more human feeling. The tracks before were a bit 'out there' and by reintroducing more recognizable elements (at a very good pace) one is reminded of the intensity of human creativity and experience. I love the fusion of instruments and sounds in this track (Drum and Vargan).
In comes Mauxuam with some glitchiness, as the mix slows down, to take the participant down (or up? :)) to another level. The song that follows, titled 'Kirk Fart' gives direction to the new level. By giving the participant more repetition, it builds up the concentration and sharpness of mind... and perhaps awareness itself.
And what better way to use awareness and concentraion, than with an avalanche of jazz and trip-hop, using Small Night Orchestra to take the trance to a much more dynamic state.
There is a meditative practice, where monks engage in zazen (sitting meditation) and a more senior monk occassionally smacks them with a stick, to induce a very sudden state of intense awareness (some are said to have reached enlightenment through this practice). I have tried to immitate this 'beating with a stick' by inserting a very suspenseful composition by James Dooley, called 'End of the Road'.
I am a gentle person however, and feeling a little guilty for the beating, I chose to introduce Easily Embarrasseds's 'Extraterrestrial Life Forms', which had a perfect intro for it. Uptempo, laid back, wonderful vibes! As it builds up, the melody keeps on spiraling and spiraling. Circles of joy.
Then comes 'Tare Om', with vocals, chosen to induce some more depth and perhaps spirituality or mysticism to the experience.
'Morning' by GMO vs Dense takes the participant back into the trance state, which has now been loosened. Preparing him or her for a build-up in tempo and a final launch.
First comes 'Lichtermeer', a very chilled out track, with an incredible amount of space inside, but the glitchy metronomelike hi's keep pushing the pace of the soundscape.
Finally come in the bleeps of 'The God Particle', a free track released by Shpongle and Benji. It is an ode to the Large Hadron Particle Collider and one can really tell. The melodies keep spiraling and spiraling in accelerating speed...
"It's trying to break through, it's almost upon us. We've been sailing towards this thing for 72 billion years and we are now 22 years from impact (2012). There's the walls, they're so steep, the acceleration is so great. We are there." - Terence McKenna, as heard in the introduction of the mix :-)
Welcome back.
