About

Barrie V writes makes and play melodies, music, songs. He also plays with words, lyrics, images.. visuals.. and philosophises a good deal. ..about tea mostly..

(All songs, lyrics, melodies, music, parts of songs are registered with the PRS (Performing Rights Society, and © Barrie Jones and © Barrie Jones unless otherwise stated.)

Barrie V has also been known to play a fine and unique selection of self-penned
and 'cover material' for a very reasonable fee, and has been known to
captivate audiences with jolly enjoyable slices of banter, repartee and
perspicacious social commentary.. and by just by being rather splendid company!

The tracks posted here are a random selection of output, ranging from home
notepad recordings to studio first demos to live songwriting sessions and instrumental experiments. - a mixed bag, but also a broad cross section of previous works.. Hope there's something of interest or even enjoyment for you here!

Reviews:

Excerpt from review in Music Now:

"Under Big skies and in cosy corners with Barrie V..

Barrie V seems to belong to the same traditions of musical giants from a Golden age, -
the late 60's and early 70's, paying respects to late period Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Ronson era Bowie.. You get the picture - like them, he composes without constraint or compromise, bowing neither to trend nor fashion on their journey. You can't pigeon-hole music like this, and like the ouvre of aforementioned greats,
this is pretty timeless stuff..

He writes 'out of the box'.. crossing and mixing genres with cool aplomb.. -
as he says; 'I don't really have a choice, as such, - the songs come to me,
and they 'BE what they want', they're like aetheric spirits.. children almost..
it's my job to nurture them.. I think McCartney put it well, We're like arials'..

His multi-faceted, inter-dimensional works tell you your own story - and help you feel it too -
they stay with you, as stories, as moments in time, - emotional crystallisations of being human,
and at the same time, there is something transcendental about them.

There are songwriters who can pull heart strings with sad songs of pain and lost love,
Barrie V happens to be one of the very few who can also do this with uplifting,
inspirational songs that still manage to move something deep inside you.
He doesn't shrink from Lennon-esque socio-poitical commentary either,
but when he waves a flag, you feel his sincerity, he's feeling this, he's living it.

His innate ability with counterpoint is breathtaking, there's always
something else to discover, there are songs like 'Summer of Love',
simply dripping with melodies, woven seamlessly, rhythmically, into musical journeys,
symphonies almost, that would make an albums' worth of material for many current artists.
Yet from the same mind, 'I know what it's like', with it's sparse insistence,
has the same beguiling simplicity as The Police's 'walking on the moon'..

Just as he writes under a big sky, he can also call you in to a cosy corner, singing to you intimately about things you feel he's sharing with you alone.. and while singing the 'big skies' with a voice that demands you listen, with the next breath, in the cosy corner, he whispers the secret you knew all along, but wanted someone else to tell you..

Is Barrie V, one of the the great undiscovered songwriters of a Golden Age?,
I hope so, because then I can claim to have discovered him!

Barrie V - Listen.com;

Tripped-out sub-Stooge rock, instrumental electronica, and synth-laden Pop Metal from this U.K.-based stylistic schizoid.

Psychedelia seems to be the one unifying element in these songs, but whatever genre is being explored,
Barrie V attacks his work with innovation, fervor and creativity to produce futuristic sonic gems!

- Excerpt from my (musical) C.V. - ..

I've worked and played with Parvinder Bharat, Roland Chadwick, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Surinder Sandhu, ColdCut and Dreadzone, amongst others... too humorous to mention..

I also collaborated and played on, in conjunction with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Coldcut and Dreadzone on the World’s first Tri-Continental multicast, broadcast live simultaneously over three continents, via the Internet, Radio and TV.. for the BBC's Tomorrow's World TV programme.

I arranged, produced, and played on the World's first non-stop two hour live acoustic radio session - one of the last live shows at what was the BBC's iconic Pebble Mill for BBC Radio's Ben Turner.. with members of the Jamplant.

I've also played numerous other live sessions for BBC Radio, including BBC Radio, BBC Radio Yorkshire, WM, Radio WCR.. etc etc, The Sheep Music Festival, Wolverhampton Civic & Wulfrun Halls, and between 2002 - 2006 I played and ran live music nights, encouraging and showcasing new musical talent in Wolverhampton and Barnsley, totting up 600 live performances! Pheww..

(My 'repertoire' at any given session might include songs from The Beatles, Queen, Radiohead, Bowie & Ronson, Bjork, Sting, Bob Marley, the Rolling Stones, the Police, David Sylvian, Led Zeppelin, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Coldplay, Tears for Fears, the Kinks, the Pretenders, Louis Armstrong, The Cars, Spinal Tap, the Aristocats..? Yes, the Aristocats..and Leonardo da Vinci ! - As well as my own, self -penned songs and instrumental pieces, which, it has often been said, stand up rather well, even in such illustrious company..)

one of my highest musical accolades relates to this song.. - some years ago I bumped into a bass player friend of mine from a previous incarnation.. Mark, a very cool dude.. and he told me that this was his partner's all time favourite song.. doesn't get any better than that really..

Masterpiece of guitar work throughout this song.. There's also an ikkle musical 'Easter Egg' at the end of the full studio version.. Had the band shaking their heads (in despair..) as I launcehd into a Musical knockabout by Lerner & Loewe.. the longest titled song at the time..'How could you believe me when I, Said I loved You, When you know I've been a liar all my life..' Pheww.. I just liked the irony of dropping that on the end.. hee
